akarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said on Thursday that city-owned company PD Pasar Jaya has increasingly been able to control prices, unlike previously when it functioned more like a property company or developer.
The governor said PD Pasar Jaya was able to improve its performance because it had begun to buy basic commodities like eggs, rice and sugar directly from producers so that prices were lower.
'Eggs and rice, for example, are bought directly from Lampung. Sugar has also been bought directly. Therefore the function of Pasar Jaya, which used to be similar to a property company, has changed. Now it is able to control retail prices. I still want more than that,' Ahok said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
He explained that Pasar Jaya now buys items straight from producers to be resold to traders, who are able to sell them more cheaply to Jakarta residents.
'If you sell above the market prices we set, we will drive you away from my wholesale market. Do you want to lose your place to trade? You don't, right? Therefore, I urge sidewalk vendors to move to the market. There we will control all,' he said. (hhr)(++++)
