s many as 700 illegal cars that operate in the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, will be granted licenses in the near future, airport officials said on Thursday.
'We will propose the registering of those cars to the Transportation Ministry's Land Transportation Directorate General,' Zulfahmi, senior general manager at the airport said as quoted by tempo.co.
According to him, the cars would get similar stickers to the other taxis at the airport, rendering them official transportation vehicles. However, he emphasized that the cars could only pick-up passengers at the airport using the regulated fee structure.
On May 12, approximately 150 drivers of illegal cars refused to be apprehended by officers from the Airport Police and state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II. During the incident, they closed the airport's Gate 2 and caused a traffic jam in the area.
At the time, they demanded that the airport officially issue licenses for them to allow them to earn a living just as other taxis did.
