Marzuki Alie likely to quit Yudhoyono'€™s party

ormer House of Representatives speaker Marzuki Alie has given signalshe would likely quit former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono'€™s DemocraticParty (PD) since he has not been entrusted with a role in the party'€™s currentstructure and composition.

'€œHaving no more jobs in the party, there is no more space to do something for the Democratic Party,'€ he said.

Marzuki, also a former deputy chairman of the party'€™s patron board, said he actually wished to play a role in developing the party but after finding out he was no longer included in the 2015-2020 structure and was not invited to the party'€™s national work meeting, he preferred to quit.

'€œSo, it is not up to me to do something for the party, but SBY has decided that I am no longer needed in the party,'€ he said.

Before the party'€™s national congress in Surabaya in May 2015, Marzuki several times criticized Yudhoyono, who wanted to lead the party again. Marzuki, who wanted to announce his bid for the party'€™s top post during the congress, called on Yudhoyono to not contest the party'€™s chairmanship election because he had been the country'€™s president for two consecutive periods through 2004-2014 and he once vowed to not run in the party chairmanship election for the 2015-2020 period.

On Saturday, Yudhoyono swore in the party'€™s new executive board and structure before the party began its national work meeting. (rms)
