strong>Your comments on the crash involving an aging C-130 Hercules military transport plane, shortly after takeoff, killing more than 110 in Medan on Tuesday:

Many put the blame on an aging airplane. However, it was reported that this particular aircraft was fresh from maintenance. There have been numerous cases around the world of planes crashing right after being serviced. Maybe, just maybe, that might be where the answer lies.

I think they should not have flown. It has been shown that the Air Force has a peace time death-rate that could very well be above the war-time dead rate.

Taco DD Vries

The government should consider the age of the plane. Old planes should be put out of service or just used for a flying short distances.

Instead of blaming the age of the aircraft you would be better to be introspective and find out why it happened and get the '€œrent a crowd'€ off the crash site as they are likely only looting and contaminating it.

Indonesia'€™s C-130s are all old planes and would require more maintenance and more spare parts to keep them flying.

Unfortunately the crash is a good example of why residential areas should not be built at the end of airport runways.

Due to mounting maintenance costs, Australia retired more recent versions of the C-130H years ago, and the same with their Hercules C-130E, replacing them with the new C-130J Super Hercules and the new Boeing C-17 Globe Master III for heavy-duty transportation.

Now if Indonesia is still flying much older versions then the maintenance cost would be rather expensive to keep them flying, but then Indonesia must have considerably lower labor costs on the maintenance which would make it cost effective to keep the older versions in the air for longer.

Eddy Saf

Planes don'€™t fall out of the sky. Again, these deaths are a direct consequence of poor maintenance. If the country was really serious about eradicating corruption the plane would have been serviced properly.

The C-130 Hercules transport plane is a very convenient aircraft that suits our mid-sized airfields.

However, a certain service-limit of 30 years has to be adopted to ensure the safe operation of the plane.

Rights committee to involve TNI, police

The government has said that a 15-member committee tasked with investigating past human rights abuses will involve military and police personnel although those institutions are allegedly implicated in the abuses. What do you think?
