he 13th salary package demanded by 65 East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial council (DPRD) members for the 2014-2019 period and approved by the budgetary board, has provoked strong criticism.
'I believe this is proof of the lack of sensitivity among the councilors who are more concerned about themselves than the interests of the people. The people are suffering from famine, are forced to eat animal food and toddlers have died of malnutrition, but the people's representatives are busy taking care of their own bellies,' NTT Information and People's Advocacy Center executive director Lerry Mboeik told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
NTT Indonesian Forum for the Environment director Herry Nait also criticized the 13th salary proposed by the NTT DPRD Budgetary Board as indicative of the difference between them and the people they represent.
'If they ask for their 13th salary, they're the same as laborers asking for holiday bonuses,' said Herry.
NTT DPRD speaker Anwar Pua Geno said the proposal for the 13th salary came from DPRD members because members of the House of Representatives (DPR) had received it.
