Local cow breeders and traders have complained over a lack of orders due to the increased imports of frozen beef in Batam markets, Riau Islands, ahead of Idul Fitri.

Amir, a beef trader and breeder at the Quarantine and Animal Care Center in Sei Temiang, Batam, said that although Idul Fitri was approaching, there had yet been signs of an increase in orders for fresh beef from his farm.

Your comments:

It is nothing new here. It is called corruption adding to the cost of production. Everyone is in for a
cut and so much so that it is cheaper to buy a cow overseas and import it thousands of kilometers via
refrigerated freight.

For example, cattle from Central Java to Jakarta must pass through in excess of 30 pay points, simply for traveling through someone else turf. And you wonder why the majority of Indonesians wallow in poverty.

Noose

If imported beef is being sold for less than the local price, the local beef price is gouging its customers. This is just a move to get higher prices by eliminating competition.
