National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti visited the Jakarta Police headquarters on Wednesday to show his appreciation for the city police'€™s seizure of 360 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 574.4 billion (US$42.5 million) in North Jakarta, the second-biggest drug haul this year.

Speaking at a press conference ,Badrodin disclosed that the police had arrested two drug traffickers, identified only as CT and MW, as they were about to hand over the drugs, known locally as shabu-shabu.

Badrodin said the traffickers were connected to a drug syndicate in China. '€œThe suspects were arrested in an apartment in Pluit, North Jakarta,'€ said the police chief.

Badrodin did not describe in detail how the syndicate smuggled the shabu-shabu into Indonesia. He hinted the drugs might have been transported via Malaysia as has been the case in previous smuggling attempts.

Your comments:

I can appreciate that the majority of Indonesians just unquestioningly accept that drug smugglers have to be killed to help save the children of Indonesia, but I will not pussyfoot about what they are unquestioningly accepting.

This is not to say that I am not well aware of the fact that many good people are supporters of the death squad/penalty, and that here more so than in other nations (such as the US), the blame of these killings primarily lies with the government, as opposed to the people who are ill-informed of the facts.

How does the death penalty work for Indonesia? The police have done an excellent job but executions achieve nothing it seems.

Ness

If the death penalty works, why were they trafficking all those drugs in Indonesia?

Kriss X

Keep doing this. There is no way in the world that we can eliminate all crime, but we can reduce the number of crimes and hopefully we can eliminate some.

Dipo

The '€œdeterrent effect'€ is just a myth used by the President and other politicians to create a false sense of accomplishment. We'€™re still waiting for the real accomplishment.

Djay Subianto

Public executions for the guilty sends the correct message.

Vacuous

The majority of the public don'€™t cheer about anything much. They'€™re too busy making ends meet. Like people anywhere they can be stirred up by nationalistic nonsense but with most people it tends to evaporate quite quickly. Not much you can do with it when you live in a village or on a remote island.

A few years ago I spent a couple of weeks in a relatively remote Muslim village in Sumatra (although it was by the sea, on a road, so there are many villages that are far more remote).

Death penalty? While President Obama pardons 49 drug dealers and prepares a law to indict drug dealers as non-violent criminals with most probably lighter jail terms and certainly no death penalty, this country just does more immoral acts.

Animi

Let it be known that the death penalty is waiting for every drug trafficker in Indonesia. When you get to court, be a man.

Don'€™t act like wimp and ask for compassion, you know what the consequences are. Sing the glory drug lord when you face firing squad.

Be a man. Let the world know that Indonesia is happy to spill the blood of drug traffickers and declare war.
