Vehicle owners make most of uncrowded Samsat office

A

round 100 residents packed the Jakarta Police'€™s Vehicle Document Registration Center (Samsat) on the first day of its operation after the office was closed during the Idul Fitri holiday from July 16 to 22.

As of Friday, residents could still enjoy smooth service and short queues at the center. Angga, 27, said it had taken less than an hour to process an extension to his vehicle registration document (STNK).

'€œThe process was quicker today, possibly because it was not as crowded as other days,'€ he said on Thursday, adding that he usually spent at least an hour at the office.

Another visitor, Hariyanto, who came with his wife and daughter, said that he had purposely come to the Samsat center on Thursday, believing that there would be fewer visitors, allowing him to renew his driving licence more quickly.

The resident of Karet Tengsin said it seemed that many of the city'€™s residents were still on holiday in their hometowns or on the way back to Jakarta.

'€œI came today, hoping that the lines wouldn'€™t be too long. And they weren'€™t. There were only two to five people [in each line],'€ he said.

On Wednesday, the Jakarta Police'€™s Samsat served 14,939 requests, comprising 217 new vehicle registrations, 734 vehicle name transfer requests, 231 vehicle mutation requests, 2,197 vehicle license extension demands and 11,560 vehicle authentication demands.

Vehicle license document section head Comr. Ojo Ruslani confirmed that his office only saw a 60 percent workload this week compared to regular days.

Separately, police reported that the number of road accidents in Jakarta during Ramadhan and Idul Fitri this year decreased.

'€œAccidents have tended to drop in terms of quantity and severity,'€ said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Mohammad Iqbal.

As of Tuesday, he said, police had recorded 68 cases of road accidents with 40 victims during this year'€™s Idul Fitri security operation, Operasi Ketupat, which was held from July 10 to 25. Of the victims, three had died, four were seriously injured and the rest had minor injuries, Iqbal said.

The Jakarta police also ticketed 11,533 vehicle users and admonished 6,590 people for violating traffic regulations.

'€œWe expect the homebound travelers to take care of themselves on their way back to Jakarta. Safety comes first. Their families and jobs are waiting for them here,'€ said Iqbal, adding that the Jakarta Police extended its gratitude to residents for their cooperation in ensuring safer roads.

Updated figures on road accidents and violations of traffic regulations were expected to be revealed on Sunday, he added.
