ovie star Velove Vexia said on Monday that her father, noted lawyer Otto Cornelis (OC) Kaligis, who is being detained for alleged bribery at the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) detention facility inside the Guntur military prison facility in South Jakarta, was in poor health.
'Papa suffers from diabetes and he has heart problems. He also has an acute gastric problem. He has so many illnesses and he is old enough. Thus, he needs a lot of vitamin intakes,' Velove said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.
She spoke shortly after she arrived at KPK headquarters before she visited her father at the Guntur detention facility. It was the second time for Velove to get a permit to visit her father since he was arrested on July 14.
Velove said that she and her father did not talk too much about the case during the visit.
'Papa only told me that he was not a plunderer of the state's money. He said he never bribed judges. He kept saying it to us,' said Velove.
The KPK has named six suspects in the case, comprising of Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN) chief justice Tripeni Irianto Putro, two panel members Amir Fauzi and Dermawan Ginting, and the court's secretary Syamsir Yusfan who allegedly received bribe money. Kaligis and his staffer, M.Yagari Bhastara Guntur aka Gerry, were named suspects for allegedly bribing the judges.
Except for Kaligis, the five suspects were caught red-handed carrying out bribery practices at Tripeni's office at PTUN Medan on July 9. KPK investigators also confiscated bribe money amounting to US$15,000 and Sin$5,000 during the raid.
Meanwhile, Kaligis was arrested at Borobudur Hotel on July 14 and detained shortly thereafter.
The lawyer had wanted the judges to rule in favor of his client in an upcoming case. In the case, a complainant named Ahmad Fuad Lubis, an official from the North Sumatra administration, filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General's Office (AGO) at the PTUN Medan because the legal institution had continued to summon and question the administration's civil servants regarding the alleged misappropriation of Lower Regional Assistance (BDB) and Social Assistance (Bansos) funds during the 2012, 2013, and 2014 periods. The complainant claimed that the North Sumatra Prosecutors' Office had already investigated the case. (ebf)(+++)
