Greater Jakarta: Canal to become haven for visitors, foodies

T

he East Jakarta municipality has announced plans to turn the East Flood Canal (KBT) in Duren Sawit into a tourist and culinary hot spot.

The head of the municipality'€™s Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade Agency, Arfian, said his office would set up four zones on the banks of the canal, each of which would have space for 200 to 250 vendors.

'€œWe plan to accommodate around 800 street vendors at the KBT,'€ Arfian said as quoted by beritajakarta.com on Saturday.

To date, he said, his agency had accepted applications from 628 street vendors to operate in the four zones.

Of those, he added, 144 vendors held Bank DKI auto debit cards used to pay the official fees.

'€œThis is our effort to organize the street vendors according to their products. Each zone will feature a mix of vendors. There will be food, clothing and accessories vendors,'€ he said.
