orth Jakarta's Parks and Cemeteries Agency faces an uphill battle to maintain the public parks in the municipality, with problems including the intrusion of salt water, which hampers plant growth.
Agency head Agustin Puji Astuti said on Saturday that the plants in the parks were struggling to grow, as water from the adjacent sea leaked into the municipality.
'Although we use the best fertilizer, the plants still aren't doing well,' she said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
The area's soil, she added, was contaminated with salt and sand. 'Suitable plants for the parks here include oil palms, mangroves and date palms.
'These plants can survive during the dry season,' she said.
Agustin suggested that each park in North Jakarta include a water treatment plant and a drilled well.
'We will immediately coordinate with related parties to construct the plants and the wells,' she said, adding that the municipality currently had only one well on Jl. Raya Boulevard and two others on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan.
