even people died on Friday evening on the newly-opened Cikopo-Palimanan (Cipali) toll road in West Java after the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a bus coming from the opposite direction.
West Java police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said a van carrying eight passengers had been traveling from Cirebon to Cikopo at 11:15 p.m. on Friday when suddenly it hit the highway's guardrail and was thrown to the other side of the toll road. The van then collided with a bus that was traveling from Jakarta.
'The van's driver lost control. The vehicle was speeding while he was possibly too sleepy to drive, this is what led to the accident,' he said on Saturday as quoted by Tribunnews.com.
Six passengers in the van, including the driver, died instantly in the crash, according to Sulistyo. Another passenger died at Sumber Waras Hospital in Cirebon while the only surviving passenger is receiving treatment at the hospital.
Data from the West Java Police reveal that more than 30 accidents have taken place on the toll road since it was opened less than a month ago on June 13. On July 6, several days before the beginning of the annual Idul Fitri exodus season, six people were killed in a crash involving a cement truck and a van on the toll road, which is the longest highway in the country.
