ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has postponed plans to increase the flight frequency for its Surabaya-Banyuwangi route due to the volcanic activity of Mount Raung in East Java.
According to Garuda Indonesia's general manager for Banyuwangi, Ismu Gito Waluyo, the volcano has caused Blimbingsari Banyuwangi airport to apply an opening and closing policy.
Prior to Mt. Raung's volcanic eruptions, the airline had planned to add extra flights to the route after July 2015, with a total of two flights per day.
As quoted by tempo.co, Ismu said that the Transportation Ministry had granted permission for a morning flight leaving Surabaya at 6 a.m. and one departing Banyuwangi at 7 a.m., in addition to Garuda's current daily afternoon service.
'We will resume the Banyuwangi-Surabaya route after Mt. Raung's volcanic activity decreases. We have also rescheduled the extra flights to commence in September," said Ismu. (nov/kes)(+++)
