Graft suspect campaigns again for Barru regent

arru Regent Andi Idris Syukur on Monday registered as incumbent regent candidate at the Barru General Elections Commission (KPUD), even though the National Police'€™s Criminal Investigation Directorate (Bareskrim) has named him a graft suspect.

Idris, who will partner with running mate Suardi Saleh, is supported by four parties, namely Gerindra, Hanura, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the United Development Party (PPP), which control 10 seats at the Barru Legislative Council (DPRD). To run for regional head, a candidate must be supported by parties that control a minimum of five seats on the council.

KPUD Barru member Muhammad Saleng said that Idris and Suardi were the first candidate pair to have registered to run for Barru regent and deputy regent in the upcoming election.

Saleng said that the incumbent regent candidate'€™s status as a corruption suspect would not affect the registration process of regional head candidates in the regency.

'€œKPUD Barru will not be influenced by the ongoing legal process. Although the incumbent regent candidate has been named a graft suspect, we will not question the matter. We will still accept his registration documents and currently, we are processing the documents. Moreover, there is not yet a binding legal ruling over his case,'€ said Saleng.

Bareskrim named Idris a suspect in extortion, graft and money laundering on July 9. He was charged with article 12 (e) of Law No.31/1999 on corruption and articles 1 and 2 of Law No.23/2003 on money laundering.

As evidence, Bareskrim confiscated a Toyota Pajero it had entrusted to the Makassar Police headquarters from the suspect.

In South Sulawesi, as many as 11 regencies are set to hold regional elections simultaneously on December 9. (ebf)(++++)
