he Jakarta administration has recorded up to 70,504 newcomers to the city from various areas across the country after the Idul Fitri holiday.
The governor's assistant for civil registration and housing, Syahrul Effendi, said that the figure was higher than last year's 68,537 post-Idul Fitri migrants.
Syahrul said that the city administration would carry out population document checks on migrants, under Operation Bina Kependudukan, starting August. Operation Bina Kependudukan is carried out by the city's Civil Registration Agency to collect data on the city's migrants. Migrants who fail to provide documents such as a letter of reference and police clearance letters from their hometowns may be fined or jailed.
'The operation aims to anticipate migrants with no residence, who mostly end up building makeshift homes on the state's land,' Syahrul said at City Hall on Monday. Syahrul said that the city administration urged migrants to report to the local neighborhood or community center.
