Author Andrea Hirata has received an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of Warwick in England.
The honorary title, according to Antara news agency on Wednesday, was given in recognition of Andrea's contribution to the literary world over the last eight years.
Professor Jan Palmowski of the University of Warwick said Andrea had brought Indonesian literature to the world's attention and his works had had an impact in many countries, not just Indonesia.
Past recipients of the award include British director Mike Leigh, whose movies have been nominated for the Oscars seven times, according to kompas.com.
Hirata has penned several books since his first novel Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Warriors), which has been translated into over 30 languages. He recently published a new novel, Ayah (Father).
