The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named on Tuesday North Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho and his second wife, Evi Susanti, suspects in a bribery case involving three judges and a clerk of the Medan State Administrative Court (PTUN).
'Today, the KPK has issued a sprindik [letter ordering the start of an investigation] for the North Sumatra governor, GPN and ES [the governor's wife] and named them suspects,' said acting KPK chairman Indriyanto Seno Adji as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He said the two suspects had been implicated in the payment of bribes to the court's judges and clerk.
Indriyanto said the KPK issued the sprindik after its leaders and investigators carried out a case expose as part of the investigation into the bribery allegation. The naming of Gatot and his wife was a development of a case previously involving prominent lawyer Otto Cornelis Kaligis.
'These were all based on further investigation of questioning results of several witnesses and from other evidence material obtained,' said Indriyanto.
In the case, the KPK previously slapped a travel ban on Gatot and Evi.
The case began with the alleged misappropriation of Lower Regional Assistance (BDB) and Social Assistance (Bansos) funds in 2012, 2013 and 2014, which allegedly involved a number of North Sumatra provincial administration officials. The North Sumatra administration then filed a pretrial petition against the corruption investigation, currently conducted by the Attorney General's Office (AGO), with the Medan court.
The corruption case was being handled by the North Sumatra Prosecutor's Office (Kejati) before the AGO took over the case.
In the midst of the administration's pretrial hearing against the AGO, the KPK discovered alleged bribery by one of Kaligis' employees, Moch. Yagari Bhastara Guntur, aka Gerry, in reportedly paying three PTUN Medan judges, namely Tripeni Irianto Putro, Amir Fauzi, dan Dermawan Ginting, and the court's clerk, Syamsir Yusfan.
The KPK suspects that Kaligis was involved in the bribery. Gerry and the three judges and the court's clerks as well as Kaligis have all been detained. (edn/ebf)(+++)
