he National Police announced on Tuesday that the number of traffic accidents that occurred during the Idul Fitri exodus had decreased by 9 percent compared to last year.
National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Suharsono said that there were only 3,048 traffic accidents from July 10 to 25 this year. Police recorded 3,337 traffic accidents during the Idul Fitri holiday season last year.
'The number of lives lost has also decreased significantly from 722 deaths last year to 646 deaths this year,' he told reporters at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.
Suharsono said that the number of people injured had also gone down from last year's figures. However, material losses from accidents had increased from Rp 7.47 billion (US$556,199) to Rp 8.69 billion.
He added that most traffic accidents occurred in Central Java, closely followed by East Java and West Java.
'Motorcycles remained the vehicle type most prone to traffic accidents, with 3,633 motorcycles involved in accidents during the exodus,' Suharsono said.
He explained that the most common cause was human error, with a majority of accidents caused by driver drowsiness.
