angkalan Police have asked higher education institutions in Bangkalan to make urine tests one of the requirements for admission as part of an effort to suppress drug circulation among students in the East Java regency.
According to chief of the Bangkalan Police drug unit, Adj. Comr. Hery Kusnanto, currently only Stikes Ngudia Husada (a nursing college) has agreed to conduct the test.
"Other higher education institutions claimed that they are not yet ready due to limited budgets," said Hery as quoted by tempo.co.
Hery added that the institutions' committees had promised to gradually prepare themselves so that they would be able to conduct urine tests as an admissions requirement in the future.
Stikes Ngudia Husada has been running the urine test for applicants for two years.
"Based on this year's urine test, one of the applicants tested positive for crystal meth [locally known as shabu-shabu] and was immediately considered a failure," said Hery.
"Hopefully the Bangkalan Education Agency will urge other institutions besides higher education institutions to conduct urine tests prior to admitting new students since it is one of the most effective ways to suppress drug circulation." (kes) (++++)
