Greater Jakarta: '€˜Ojek'€™ driver released after wrong conviction

T

he Jakarta High Court has ruled in favor of an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver identified as Dedi, who had been sentenced to two years in prison by the East Jakarta District Court for murdering a minibus driver near the PGC Cililitan shopping center in East Jakarta, but appealed his sentence.

Dedi was arrested by the East Jakarta Police on Sept. 25, 2014, seven days after the murder took place.

His wife, Nurohmah, 24, who received help from the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation (LBH Jakarta), said she did not have a plan to file a lawsuit against the East Jakarta Police, adding that she would hand over the matter to their lawyer.

'€œI do not have such a plan. I am already very grateful to hear that my husband will be released,'€ she said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

She said her husband had not yet left the Cipinang Penitentiary as of Thursday because she still had to complete some administrative documents required for his release.

Nurohmah said her family had been through hard times since Dedi was arrested by the police. She said their 3-year-old son died of malnutrition while Dedi was in prison and she had to work as an ojek driver to earn a living.
