The problem with refugees

I

n reference to '€œPolicies that kill those who flee for their lives,'€ (The Jakarta Post, July 26) by Arjan Hehenkamp, Geneva.

This is indeed a worldwide problem, but the available solutions are not plentiful. Greece doesn'€™t need the problem, Australia doesn'€™t want people showing up unannounced on its shores and countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia wished some other country would take the refugees they now take care of as they await resettling.

Currently for Europe and Asia the vast majority of the refugees are coming out of Muslim-dominated countries and the majority of them are leaving because of war and terrorism attacks going on in those countries. The problem with refugees suddenly showing up is: who exactly are these people?

They often carry no documents to identify them or their countries of origin, so are Governments expected to welcome them with open arms or turn them away or to make sure that they reach a safe destination where they can be processed for resettlement by the UN? Unfortunately, there are no easy answers except to find an orderly way to get all refugees to destinations where they can be processed in a correct fashion.
