Food commodities, transportation contribute to July inflation: BPS

C

entral Statistics Agency (BPS) head Suryamin said on Monday that food commodities and transportation tariffs had been key contributors to July'€™s inflation, recorded at 0.93 percent.

'€œStaple foods remained the biggest contributors to the inflation in July, followed by transportation costs, because we had the Idul Fitri homeward-bound traveling season in July. The holiday season had a great impact on the month'€™s inflation,'€ he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Monday.

Suryamin said that increases in the prices of staple foods were spread evenly across all food commodities, especially ahead of the Idul Fitri festivities.

'€œIn July, the increase in rice price was not too high. The rice price was controlled relatively well although harvest season had finished. However, the prices of other commodities had increased quite significantly prior to the Ramadhan fasting month and Idul Fitri,'€ he said.

July'€™s inflation was recorded at 0.93 percent, similar to July last year, and the January-July inflation rate for this year stood at 1.9 percent. Inflation over the past twelve months, or year-on-year, was 7.26 percent.

'€œThis year'€™s July inflation rate was similar to the one occurred in July last year but certainly, their compositions or causing factors were different,'€ said Suryamin.

According to BPS, core inflation in July was 0.34 percent while year-on-year it stood at 4.86 percent, indicating stable economic conditions.

'€œThe core component of inflation stood at 4.86 percent in July whereas three months ago, it still stood at above 5 percent. This shows that Indonesia'€™s economic components are still quite good overall and that economic influences have led to positive, better conditions,'€ said Suryamin. (ebf)
