The East Jakarta municipality has announced plans to turn the East Flood Canal (KBT) in Duren Sawit into a tourist and culinary hot spot.
The head of the municipality's Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade Agency, Arfian, said his office would set up four zones on the banks of the canal, each of which would have space for 200 to 250 vendors.
Your comments:
It's an interesting concept, but the first thing the municipality should do is invest in water treatment and maintenance of said canals. Most canals in Jakarta are dirty, smelly and clogged.

Are street vendors really a culinary experience? Surely the 'tourists' being catered to are local college students and families. So much for generating needed revenue; it's just moving street vendors from one place to another.
