ustralian airlines Jet Star and Virgin Australia cancelled their flights to and from Denpasar, Bali, on Wednesday morning over concerns that ashes spewing from the erupting Mount Raung in East Java would put them in danger.
The cancellations of the flights serving routes between Bali and several cities in Australia, such as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, left hundreds of passengers stranded at the airport.
Despite the cancellations, general manager of state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura I, Trikora Harjo, said that the airport remained open. In a previous case, the Bali airport itself was officially closed down for a couple of hours due to threatening weather caused by the eruption at Mount Raung.
'For now, we are still operating normally,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The authorities shut down the airport from July 9 to 12 during the first eruption, disrupting at least 227 domestic and international flights and leaving more than 30,000 passengers stranded. (ika)(++++)
