Muhammadiyah to elect chairman in closed meeting

T

he 13 new members of the Muhammadiyah central executive board (DPP) are set to hold a closed meeting to elect a new chairman and secretary general at the venue of the organization'€™s 47th muktamar (national congress) at Makassar Muhammadiyah University (Unismuh) on Thursday.

The congress'€™ organizing committee head Dahlan Rais said in Makassar on Thursday that the 13 members, who formed the Muhammadiyah executive leadership, would choose two from among themselves to become chairman and secretary general.

'€œThey will seek the congress'€™ participants'€™ approval of the person they choose as chairman. For the secretary general, they will straightaway give their approval,'€ he said as quoted by Antara.

After obtaining the approval of the forum, Dahlan said, the new chairman-elect and secretary general-elect would be set to serve as Muhammadiyah'€™s chairman and secretary general for the period of 2015-2020.

Dahlan said that in the closed meeting on Thursday, the forum leader would ask Haedar Nashir, who won the most votes '€“ 1,947 '€“ during the election of DPP members, to become Muhammadiyah'€™s chairman.

'€œIf Pak Haedar agrees, and all meeting participants give their approval, then the meeting is finished, because a chairman has been chosen by acclamation,'€ he said.

But if Haedar did not agree, he could handover the chance to become the new chairman to other candidates, Dahlan added.

Meanwhile Yunahar Ilyas, who ranked second in the DPP election with 1,928 votes, said all members-elect had an equal right to elect and to stand for the position of chairman.

'€œIn a muktamar, the largest number of votes is not how a chairman is picked. All candidates have an equal opportunity,'€ he said.

However, Yunahar said, DPP meetings for selecting a new Muhammadiyah chairman had often begun with the extension of an offer of the chairmanship to the member who had obtained the largest number of votes [in the DPP election].

The handover of the Muhammadiyah executive leadership is scheduled to be held at the congress'€™ twelfth plenary meeting, which will start at 10 a.m. local time on Friday. (rad/ebf)(++++)
