ndonesian Ambassador to the UK and Ireland, Hamzah Thayeb, launched the 'UK National Tour 2015 ' Discover Indonesia' on Tuesday, aimed at promoting the 'Wonderful Indonesia' tourism campaign and luring more Britons to the archipelago. The tour offers various Indonesian traditional arts performances presented by three performance groups, he added.
'By presenting arts and cultural performances from around the country, we hope British people will learn more about Indonesia, as at this point their knowledge of Indonesia is limited to Bali,' he said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.
The launch of Discover Indonesia in London on Tuesday evening was attended by Indonesia's deputy chief of mission Anita Luhulima and representatives of several institutions, namely the London-branch of Bank Indonesia, the Coordinating Investment Board (BKPM), Garuda Indonesia, the Southbank Centre and the British Council.
Hamzah said many Britons were not acquainted with Indonesia, although UK Prime Minister David Cameron recently visited Indonesia ' his first official visit to Asia after his re-election ' bringing with him a delegation of UK entrepreneurs.
The three performance groups on the tour are Papermoon Puppet Theatre from Yogyakarta, Kande from Aceh and Soeryo Soemirat, a classical Javanese dance group from the Mangkunegaran Palace in Surakarta. They will perform in four cities ' Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London ' from August to September.
'I hope that through their performances, British people will better understand Indonesia,' said Hamzah.
The ambassador said he respected the British Council's efforts to organize the Discover Indonesia event, supported by Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, which was aimed at presenting Indonesia's culture at world class festivals in arts centers across the UK.
Meanwhile, the British Council UK and Indonesia program manager Jane Showell said the Discover Indonesia program was part of its four-year Indonesia and UK program. The program is part of the British Council's commitment to creative industries developed by the UK and Indonesian governments.
She said that Discover Indonesia would also mark the 70th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence Day. (ebf)(++++)
