General Electric (GE) officially opened GE Garage Indonesia on Tuesday, a collaborative learning event designed to hone creative skills, provide first-hand building experience and connect like-minded Indonesian innovators.

Running until Aug. 23 at Ciputra Artpreneur in South Jakarta and open to the public at no charge, the GE Garage offers the opportunity to work with experts to learn more about advanced manufacturing processes. Its program includes hands-on classes, workshops and talks by inspirational innovators.

The classes will offer participants access to 3D printers, Arduino kits, CNC mills and laser cutters and more while the workshops will include instruction on how to design and produce popular items such as drones, pinhole cameras and zoetropes.

Meanwhile, the meet-up sessions will feature speakers from startups and social enterprises such as Geeknesia, Flipbox, Somia CX, Tone, Myo Kidz, Sabang Meruake, Make Sense, Cewequat and Hijabspeak.

'€œInnovation is at the heart of the GE culture. It is in this same spirit that GE Garage has been created," said GE Indonesia CEO Handry Santriago in a press release on Tuesday.

"The concept behind GE Garage is simple; make some of these breakthrough technologies accessible to young designers, budding entrepreneurs and students, and empower them by getting them acquainted with additive manufacturing that is leading change in the sector. With the considerable innovative talent in Indonesia, I am looking forward to seeing some really great ideas come out of GE Garage which can then be realized and commercialized.'€

Secretary general of the Research Technology and Higher Education Ministry, Ainun Naim, said '€œIndonesia has a vast pool of talented designers and makers who are brimming with ideas. We are very encouraged to see companies, such as GE, taking an active role in introducing and providing the opportunity to learn about and experience new technologies that will shape the future of manufacturing."

GE first created the Garage program in 2012 to reinvigorate America's interest in invention, innovation, and manufacturing through a network of centers about modern manufacturing technologies. Since then, it has been staged in 16 cities across nine countries on three continents. (kes)(++++)
