The government plans to involve the private sector in the management of Indonesia's small islands located in border areas.
Deputy assistant for spatial defense and border area coordination at the coordinating political, legal and security affairs ministry Brig. Gen. Ahmad Surpriyadi said that the involvement of the private sector would be mentioned in the new law that would replace the 2005 law on the management of small islands in border areas.
'The bottom line is that this partnership does not violate other laws,' he told tempo.co recently.
Ahmad said that the idea on building partnerships with the private sector came after realizing that the government had a limited capability to monitor remote islands in border areas.
Therefore, he hoped that cooperation with the private sector would optimize the management of these islands not only in the economic sector but also other sectors, including environmental, social and educational.
Currently, the management of small Indonesian islands in border areas is the sole responsibility of the government with 17 ministries under the coordinating legal, political, security affairs ministry monitoring those islands. (ika)(++++)
