S. Korea asks RI to assist Korean Peninsula reconciliation efforts

S

outh Korean politician Chun Eui-yong asked Indonesia on Wednesday to make a contribution to his country'€™s reconciliation process with North Korea.

Chung argued that Indonesian had a unique role as one of the founding fathers of the Non-Aligned Movement that could help bridge differences between the two countries.

'€œIndonesia has for years been at the forefront of the Non-Aligned Movement, therefore it understands the idea well,'€ Chung said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Chung said he had confidence that Indonesia'€™s active involvement could contribute to reconciliation between the two countries.

Seoul and Pyongyang have remained in a state of war since the Korean War in the 1950s ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. Relations between the two countries has worsened since the 2010 sinking of a South Korean warship, killing 46 sailors.

On Tuesday, North and South Korea agreed to end a military standoff yet many issues remain unresolved, including the sensitive issue North Korea'€™s nuclear program.

Chung discussed Indonesian'€™s potential role in the Korean Peninsula region during a meeting with Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla in Seoul, South Korea.

Kalla arrived in Seoul at noon on Wednesday to speak at the 2015 World Summit on Peace, Security and Human Development.

During his visit, Kalla is also scheduled to meet South Korean politicians and businessmen. (ika)(++++)
