City police break up international drug syndicates

J

akarta city police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said on Thursday that the city police had managed to bust an international drug syndicate, seizing 94 kilograms of crystal methamphetamines and 112,000 ecstasy pills in the process.

'€œThis indicates that Jakarta is a potential target for drug trafficking,'€ he said at a press conference at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport as quoted by tempo.co.

He added that his officers spent two weeks on the case before finally managing to uncover the syndicate.

According to Tito, 94 kg of crystal methamphetamines is worth Rp 150 billion (US$10.5 million), while the ecstasy pills are worth Rp 56 billion.

The uncovering of the drug trafficking attempt began with airport customs officers'€™ suspicion regarding the activities of two Chinese nationals with the initials of UMCB and CSW, who arrived at terminal D of the airport on Aug. 9. They had flown to Indonesia from Guangzhou, passing through Kuala Lumpur on a Malaysian Airlines flight. (bbn)
