National scene: Pos Indonesia gets Trigana compensation

S

tate-owned postal firm PT Pos Indonesia received on Wednesday an insurance payout of Rp 6.5 billion, (US$466,053) in compensation for losses it incurred in the recent crash of a Trigana Air aircraft in Papua.

The Trigana Air plane crashed on Aug. 16 in Oksibil, Papua. Of the 54 passengers who were killed in the accident, four were Pos Indonesia employees who were carrying cash to be paid to 10,958 families participating in a rural savings program.

'€œWe had insured both the funds and the lives of the four employees,'€ Pos Indonesia'€™s president director Poernomo told reporters on Wednesday.

Each of the four employees'€™ families has received Rp 20 million from insurer PT Bumiputera Muda (Bumida).

Poernomo named the four employees as Yustinus Hurulean, Mathius Nicolas Aragay, Agustinus Luanmase and Teguh Warisman Sane. They were registered with Pos Indonesia'€™s Regional XI branch office in Jayapura.

They were scheduled to pay the money to families in Pegunungan Bintang regency, Papua, who had saved their money with Pos Indonesia under the prosperous family savings program (PSKS), after the flag-raising ceremony on Aug. 17. However, the Trigana aircraft flying them from Jayapura to Oksibil crashed 30 minutes after take-off. The next day, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) found the debris of the airplane along with the bodies of the 54 passengers.

Basarnas also found some of Pos Indonesia'€™s cash that was being transported by the four employees. '€œOf the cash, Rp 500 million was undamaged and Rp 200 million was damaged, while the remainder was burned up,'€ Poernomo explained.
