member of Commission III overseeing legal affairs at the House of Representatives, Achmad Basarah, has expressed concern over the fact that police officers may have joined a terrorist group, citing it as evidence that terrorist recruiters are eyeing police officers as potential members.
"There are a number of police officers who have joined terrorist groups. The groups use many methods [to recruit new members]," said Achmad in a dialog on curbing terrorism at Brawijaya University in the East Java town of Malang on Thursday as reported by tempo.co.
At least one police officer in Jambi has allegedly joined the Islamic State (IS) movement. The police officer has reportedly left to join IS members in Iraq or Syria, according to chairman of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Comr. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution.
According to Achmad, the effort to recruit educated indviduals by terrorist groups is part of their efforts to strengthen their networks. "If police officers, who are equipped with a strong mental ideology, can be recruited, what about university students?" he said.
BNPT's prevention director Brig. Gen. Hamidin warned that the terrorists' methods and networks always changed. (bbn)
