P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has officially opened six diesel power stations (PLTD) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Friday via a video conference that he joined from a steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) in Batang, Central Java.

The location of one facility being opened was Naekake village in North Central Timor regency, four hours away from the city of Kefamenanu that shares a border with Timor Leste's Oekusi district.

In addition to Naekake village, the new PLTDs are located in Oepoli village in Kupang regency, Kefamenanu, Kobalima district in Malaka regency, Atambua in Belu regency and Ndao Island in Rote Ndao regency.

The Naekake PLTD has an electricity generation capacity of 500 kilowatt (kW). Previously, residents have had to use sehen (solar panels) lamps provided by state-owned electricity firm PLN.

Prior to the new power stations, the PLN in NTT had provided regular access to electricity in several locations as part of Indonesia's 70th Independence Day, including to Naekake village, Ndao Island and Oepoli village.

Naekake village head Milkior Kebo said he felt liberated after finally being able to enjoy regular access to electricity over the last three days. For up to 70 years, he has been unable to do so.

He admitted that he had felt jealous of the Timor Leste residents who have enjoyed reliable power supply for a long time.

"Now our children can study at night," said Milkior.

The six PLTDs are part of the government'€™s electricity infrastructure project that involves 50 PLTDs in six provinces including East Nusa Tenggara, Aceh, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Maluku and Papua. (kes)
