n order to regulate street vendors, the Jakarta administration has planned to build a food court and souvenir center, dubbed Lenggang Jakarta, at the Jakarta Islamic Center in North Jakarta, similar to the one created at the National Monument (Monas) park in Central Jakarta.
The Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade (KUMKMP) Agency's head, Irwandi, said the city administration would allocate Rp 10 billion (US$708,850) to build the facilities as well as train the street vendors who currently operate around the Islamic Center.
'The system will be the same as Lenggang at Monas, like using electronic money, and the quality of the food will be monitored,' he said, adding that the project would be executed next year.
Irwandi said around 200 to 300 street vendors occupy the area around the Islamic Center at night.
'It will be better if we organize them,' he said, adding that the city also planned to make the center a religious tourism destination.
He said that aside from food vendors, the city would facilitate souvenir shops that were in line with the theme of the destination.
