he construction of a cruise ship marina, as part of the country's integrated marine tourist site in Banyuwangi, East Java, will start on Sept. 11, an executive said on Tuesday.
The president director of state-run port operator subsidiary PT Pelindo Properti, Prasetyo, said that the 30-hectare marina was set to be able to accommodate 150 cruise ships or yachts.
'The project launch also marks the start of the region's Boom Beach area renovation,' said Prasetyo, saying that Tourism Minister Arief Yahya would launch the construction on Sept. 11.
A technical team from port operator PT Pelindo III has held several meetings with the Banyuwangi administration to discuss the marina construction concept together with Ahmad Juhara, a renowned Indonesian architect. 'Currently, all the processes regarding land mapping, construction permit and other licensing are almost complete. The construction is set to start in early 2016,' Prasetyo said as quoted by kompas.com.
A commercial area including hotels, restaurants, water sports facilities and a one-day cruise service will also be built with local wisdom and environmental concerns in mind. 'The Boom Beach development will also serve as a gateway to other marine destinations around Banyuwangi such as Merah Island, Plengkung Beach and Sukamade,' Prasetyo explained.
The marina development was planned to be integrated with the development of Tanjung Benoa in Bali and Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara. 'The next phase of the area development includes a resort construction on a small island off the coast of Boom Beach,' Prasetyo added.
Meanwhile, architect Ahmad Juhara said that maritime tourism development around Boom Beach in Banyuwangi would hopefully drive the development of the surrounding area as well as accommodate cultural spaces and public education such as the development of an eco-park. Ahmad added that Boom Beach would be prioritized as a green area where the use of motor vehicles would be minimized, giving more space for cyclists and pedestrians. (nov)
