urabaya Mayor Tri 'Risma' Rismaharini has expressed disappointment with the city's General Elections Commission (KPUD) for annulling the candidacy of her rival for the upcoming mayoral election.
'Something is weird about the mayoral election in Surabaya. I don't know if it's because of the rival or the regulation from the election body,' Risma told reporters on Monday.
The Surabaya KPUD previously disqualified the candidacy of the Rasiyo-Dhimam Abror Djuraid pair for the city's mayoral election, arguing that Dhimam failed to submit proper tax payment documents, or an official recommendation letter from the National Mandate party (PAN), which announced support for his candidacy.
Risma, whose reelection bid has been endorsed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), expressed pessimism that another candidate pair would register with the KPUD after the latter announced that it would reopen the registration period for aspiring candidates from Sept. 6 to 8.
The local elections law stipulates that a regional head election must field at least two candidate pairs in order to be deemed valid. Surabaya KPUD chairman Robiyan Arifin, meanwhile, has urged Risma to legally challenge the KPUD's decision should she feel disappointed with it.
