Taipei women's rights activists demand disposal of train cards featuring porn star

T

aipei City's women's rights committee yesterday called for the immediate disposal of the controversial limited-edition card covers "Angles and Demons" featuring Japanese porn star Yui Hatano.

"We demand that the Taipei City Government and the EasyCard Corp. cease circulation and selling of the cards, and destroy the cards that were already printed," read the press statement.

Apart from demanding the complete disposal of the printed cards, the committee also asked the government to apologiSe to Taipei City citizens for promoting wrong, distorted gender rights information, and for causing social dissent.

A standard operating procedure system should also be set up to handle similar "public gender issues," the group said.

The committee blasted Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je's disinterested attitude toward the matter, and the unsuitable remarks made by Taipei City's office for gender equality.

The entire city government, the group stated, is like a prisoner held hostage by Tai Chi-chuan, co-chairman of EasyCard Corp.

"In just a few days," since the announcement of the controversial cards, "the issue has revealed not just the city government's ignorance regarding gender awareness issues, but also exposed government officials' ideals of patriarchy and hegemony."

"This is disappointing, and completely destroys what the city government has done for gender rights in the long term," the statement read. (++++)
