he Jakarta administration plans to provide double-decker buses to connect the National Monument (Monas) park to Southeast Asia's biggest textile market in Tanah Abang, both in Central Jakarta, to accommodate shoppers and tourists.
Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said at City Hall on Tuesday that the buses would be aimed at encouraging people to take public transportation, instead of using private vehicles.
'We plan to turn Tanah Abang into a bigger market but shoppers won't need to bring their private vehicles, which usually cause traffic jams,' he said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Ahok said passengers could purchase weekly, monthly or annual tickets.
He added that he also planned to increase parking fees in the city.
'Parking will be more expensive and if we find any vehicles illegally parked, we will tow them,' he said.
Although Tanah Abang market is the biggest in Jakarta, it is not integrated into public transportation networks such as the Transjakarta bus service.
