Ministry prepares steps to address rupiah depreciation

The Industry Ministry has prepared steps to address the impact of the depreciation of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar.

"We encourage businesspeople to substitute imported materials with local ones," said Industry Minister Saleh Husin during a work meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI overseeing state-owned companies on Tuesday night as quoted by Antara news agency.

The ministry also encourages the usage of local alternative materials to replace imported ones to maintain the existence of the small and medium industries by increasing productivity through human resources' competence.

"We will provide assistance and technical guidance to encourage the use of local materials and product diversification," said Saleh.

The ministry will also assist small and medium enterprises to boost efficiency in product processing, access to information and marketing.

"We will boost the marketing of exported products through promotional activities and exhibition as well as by opening booths overseas," said Saleh.

He added that the ministry's budget ceiling for 2016 reached Rp 3.33 trillion (US$235.5 million) or lower than Rp 576 billion from last year. The budget is said to comprise personnel expenditures (Rp 634.67 billion), operational expenditures (Rp 172.49 billion) and non-operational expenditures (Rp 2.5 trillion), which include an educational fund of Rp 370 billion.
