resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo had lunch on Tuesday with transportation workers including ojek (motorbike taxi) drivers, public minivan drivers and pedicab drivers at the State Palace.
Jokowi said that the lunch was held to honor the workers.
'I have invited them here just to have lunch. I have no other interests,' the President said in his remarks.
During the lunch, Jokowi shared a story about when he first came to Jakarta and had to use several means of public transportation just to travel from Klender in East Jakarta to Kuningan in South Jakarta.
'Between 1985 and 1988 in Jakarta, every morning at 6 a.m., I had to take three different modes of transportation. I remember it well. In 1985, I took a ride on a metro-mini,' he said.
Jokowi also reminded drivers to engange in healthy competition.
'Everywhere, there is always competition. So, ojek and Go-Jek must not fight with each other,' he said, referring to the popular ojek-hailing app that is now all the rage.
One of the drivers present said he was very happy meeting with Jokowi.
'I felt very proud. As a boy from the street, I felt honored. It was difficult to describe the feeling. I was also confused. I was very happy,' said Rofiq, a Go-Jek driver.
