US to aid Indonesia with electricity project

T

he US government is set to support President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo's 35,000 megawatt (MW) power plant project by establishing an energy work group that will collaborate with the government of Indonesia.

"The US government supports Indonesia's efforts to develop its economy. And one of the key efforts is developing power plants to produce 35,000 MW of power," said US Ambassador to Indonesia Robert O. Blake Jr., as quoted by kompas.com, while he was signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

He added that 52 firms and 11 agencies from the US were set to participate in several activities held by the work group.

"The group will then collaborate with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and PLN to see the potential aid that the US can give to Indonesia," said Blake.

Meanwhile, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said said the scope of the cooperation outlined in the MoU included coal emission technology, the usage of renewable energy and minimizing the use of diesel fuel. There is also an agreement to develop a more efficient network for remote areas and the use of renewable energy in the electricity sector.

"The development of power plants with a total capacity of 35,000 MW is no longer a target, it is a requirement for Indonesia. Since the project is not easy, we need support from many countries that have a developed and tested electricity industry such as the US," said Sudirman.

He added that the cooperation will also serve as opportunities for both countries' electricity businesspeople and experts to share their experiences on energy policy. (kes)
