V

eteran athletes from across the country will join the 2015 National Masters Athletics Championship being held from Thursday to Saturday at the Sriwedari Stadium in Surakarta, Central Java.

The championship, the sixth staged so far, will see 437 athletes compete in 15 athletic events, which are divided into 10 different age groups of between 35 and 80 years old.

The chairman of the championship'€™s organizing committee, Tuni Sulandari, said among the sports to be contested in the tournament would be running, the long jump and shot put.

'€œInterestingly, many participants in this year'€™s championship are over 70 years old,'€ Tuni said.

She said the championship also functioned as a medium to select athletes to take part in the 2016 Asia Masters Athletic Championship in Singapore and the World Masters Athletic Championship 2016 in Perth, Australia.

'€œSo, this is a kind of training event for them,'€ said Tuni.
