Jokowi to announce bullet train investor

P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is set to announce which investor will be chosen to build Indonesia's first high-speed railway following the submission of the Office of the Coordinating Economic Minister'€™s final recommendation.

"We submitted our recommendation to the President and he said he would announce [the investor] himself," said Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution at the State Palace on Thursday after meeting Jokowi and other ministers and state officials.

Darmin refused to say which investor was likely to win the project, although he said that comments Jokowi made suggested it would be similar to the recommendation.

"Based on the impacts on other economic aspects and local content, China is more superior. But based on track record, development in technology, risk and accident numbers, Japan is better," said Darmin as quoted by Antara news agency.

He added that whatever the decision, the project would not burden the state budget. The project will involve business-to-business cooperation, which will involve state-owned companies.

Jokowi seems very careful about making a decision on the huge project. Besides Darmin, other ministers and state officials who joined the meeting on Thursday afternoon included Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Rizal Ramli, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar, Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan, State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno, National Development Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil and Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama.
