The South Sulawesi High Prosecutors' Office has said that it has received the complete case dossier of Abraham Samad, the suspended chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), who was accused of counterfeiting documents for an identity card for a woman named Feriyani Lim.
'The case dossier of Abraham Samad has been completed both formally and materially. We [the prosecutors' office] are waiting for another document from the South Sulawesi Police so that we could proceed further with the case,' said Muhammad Yusuf, an assistant to the head of the prosecutors' office's general crime division, in Makassar on Thursday.
Yusuf said he had informed the South Sulawesi Police about his office's decision informally, which would be followed with an official letter, with the hope that the police would immediately complete the second-level document so that the prosecutors could draft a formal charge against Abraham.
'After that the team of prosecutors would draft the charge to be submitted to the Makassar District Court,' he added.
Before finally being accepted by the prosecutors' office, Abraham's case dossier was returned to the police four times because it was incomplete.
The head of South Sulawesi Police's detective and general crime division, Comr. Gani Alamsyah Hatta, said that his office was waiting for the official letter from the prosecutors' office about the progress of Abraham's case dossier.
He, however, said that the police are ready to submit the needed document to the prosecutors' office immediately. 'Soon after we receive the letter from the prosecutors, we will make the documents,' Gani added.
Meanwhile, Abraham lawyer, Adnan Buyung Azis, said that his team was ready to face trial and had prepared a number of witnesses to defend Abraham in court.
Both Abraham and Feriyani were accused of counterfeiting facts when processing an ID for the latter, contravening both the Criminal Code and Law No. 23/2006 on population administration. The police in Makassar had named Abraham a suspect in connection to his alleged involvement in the fraudulent issuance of an ID and family cards to Feriyani Lim, from West Kalimantan, to enable her to apply for a passport in 2007.
Abraham and former KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto were investigated by the police after the KPK named then police chief candidate Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan a graft suspect. Budi was announced to be a graft suspect one day before he underwent his screening by House Commission III overseeing legal affairs, on Jan. 13. (bbn)
