National scene: Police name a suspect in Pelindo case

T

he National Police have named FN, an employee of state port operator PT Pelindo II, a suspect in the graft case related to the procurement of fixed crane loading and unloading equipment.

'€œYes, only that one person,'€ said National Police detective chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso, as quoted by kompas.com.

Having been reprimanded recently by Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan for overexposing his investigation into the case, Budi refused to name the suspect. But other sources have said that the suspect is the company'€™s operational director Ferialdy Nurlan.

Ferialdy is known as a confidant of the company'€™s president director RJ Lino, who resisted a search of the company'€™s offices last week.

The police accuse Ferialdy of violating the 2001 Corruption Law for inflating prices in the 2013 procurement project.

A procurement of 10 mobile cranes was said to be needed for eight ports. In fact, the eight ports did not request the crane purchases.

This is not the first time Pelindo II has faced scrutiny. Last year, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned Lino over alleged irregularities in the purchase of US$17 million worth of equipment for three sea ports in Palembang and Lampung in Sumatra, and Pontianak in Kalimantan.
