Safety in numbers: Public Order Agency officers enforce a prohibition on sidewalk animal sales on Sept

Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has advised schools not to hold animal slaughtering events on the Day of Sacrifice, or Idul Adha, on Sept. 24, saying that doing so could spark diseases.
'The animals' blood could squirt anywhere and children could contract diseases,' Ahok said as quoted by tribunnews.com. He also said that animal slaughtering should not be carried out in other public places either, suggesting that the practice be confined to slaughter houses.
The head of the City Maritime, Agriculture and Food Resilience Agency, Darjamuni, however, stressed on Wednesday that the city administration did not prohibit the slaughtering of animals at schools, but said that slaughtering should be done under supervision.
'Under Gubernatorial Instruction No 168/2015, there is no article that prohibits animal slaughtering at schools. It is allowed, but should be monitored,' he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com. He said his agency had briefed 650 people who will monitor animal slaughters across the city on the Day of Sacrifice.
Darjamuni said that the city had learned from previous year that prohibiting animal slaughtering at schools would be widely protested. 'We meant well when we imposed the ban [last year], intending to avoid negative consequences. This year [the ban] has been revoked' he added.
Darjamuni stressed, however, that animal slaughtering at schools could only be carried out on the Day of Sacrifice, while on other days, it should be confined to slaughter houses.
City councilor Nasrullah from the Prosperous Justice Party called on Governor Ahok not to interfere with religious traditions like the slaughtering of animals during Idul Adha because such an intervention could spark conflict. (bbn)
