The Papua Police have ensured that Idul Adha celebrations in Tolikara, Papua, will run safely, during which Muslims in the regency will mark the festivity with prayers and sacrifices.
'We will communicate with all parties and guarantee that Idul Adha celebrations in Tolikara will run safely and smoothly,' Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw said in Jayapura on Wednesday.
It was reported that one person was shot dead and 11 others suffered gun-shot injuries when a violent mob allegedly affiliated with the Evangelical Church of Indonesia (GIDI) disrupted Muslims who were holding an Idul Fitri prayer service in a local mosque in Tolikara on July 15. A number of kiosks and the musholla (prayer house for Muslims) were burned down.
'Such an incident will not happen again. All parties in Tolikara want peace. Thus, we are already committed to maintaining public order,' said Waterpauw.
However, he said, the police would continue to strengthen security in the area to anticipate provocations, which could lead to criminal acts.
'We will prepare our security personnel, and if needed, we can ask the Indonesian Military to give us support. We will coordinate this matter with the commander of the [Cendrawasih] Military Area Command,' said Waterpauw.
He said the police were completing case dossiers for alleged perpetrators of the Tolikara arson attack. 'Case dossiers of two suspects are being processed and this will soon be handed over to the [Jayapura] Prosecutor's Office,' said Waterpauw.
He further explained that the reconstruction of kiosks and the musholla was 85 percent complete. It was hoped that local people who lost their homes and were still living in temporary shelters could immediately move to new places and continue their business activities.
Waterpauw said a ballistic test of the weapons used in the attack was still ongoing at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta.
'We have sent 10 weapons for the ballistic test but up until now we have not yet received the results,' said Waterpauw. (ebf)
