he city administration is currently hauling out an estimated 100 metric tons of waste, which has piled up for over 30 years, from the Cipinang River in Rambutan subdistrict, Ciracas district, East Jakarta.
East Jakarta sanitation subagency head Wahyu Pudjiastuti said that the municipal administration had since Monday mobilized 25 garbage trucks to transport the waste, which has piled up to six meters, to a landfill. As of Tuesday afternoon, however, much of the waste had still not been removed.
'East Jakarta Mayor [Bambang Musyawardana] has ordered that we clean up this area. Therefore we will continue to remove waste from the Cipinang River until it is clean,' Wahyu said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Separately, Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama said that he had known of the waste even before he took office as deputy governor in 2012. Ahok said that since taking office, he had continuously asked former Public Works Agency and Sanitation Agency heads to remove waste from the Cipinang River but to no avail.
'Not one agency head did what I ordered. After I inaugurated Pak Bambang as East Jakarta Mayor earlier this year, I ordered him to clean up the Cipinang River and he finally did the job,' Ahok told reporters at City Hall on Tuesday.
