myGadget: Eddy Susanto: Weathering the digital storm

JP/Novia D. Rulistia

Yogyakarta-based artist Eddy Susanto always keeps up to date with the latest developments in technology, but refuses to be called a gadget freak.

'€œI'€™m always curious about what the latest technology has to offer, especially smartphones. I have changed my phone several times, because I want to test their performance,'€ he said.

For Eddy, the evolution of technology has made life easier, but it is not the end of the world if he doesn'€™t get the newest gadget.

He once tried to live without a smartphone because he wanted to know what it felt like. '€œI survived for one year.'€

Eddy, 40, while recognizing the benefits that technology can bring, thinks it can also make people lazy.

'€œThere'€™s an assumption that the development of technology does not go hand-in hand with the development of human morality.'€

'€œMany people know about many things today, but only a few actually understand them. Most people don'€™t bother to delve deeper than the surface to find out more,'€ he said.

'€œTechnology is good, but it also has bad side; we must know how to hold on in the middle of digital bombardment,'€ Eddy said.

Eddy, who studied graphic design at the Fine Art Institute (ISI) Yogyakarta, recently held his fifth solo exhibition, entitled '€œJavaScript'€, at the National Gallery in Central Jakarta.

Self-assembled PC

I always assemble the inner components of my own PC. I recently changed my processor from AMD to Intel Core i7 because it offers more stability. As I'€™m also a graphic designer, and the software for graphic design requires huge memory, I prefer to assemble my own PC because it can be adjusted to my particular needs.

Applications and software

I like reading news, so I have several news applications, such as Kompas, Republika, Tempo and National Geographic on my phone. I also have Facebook and Instagram accounts to share news about my works and events. For design software, my favorites are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe inDesign, CorelDraw, and several font grapher applications.

Asus Zenfone 2

I just bought this phone a few months ago, replacing my Samsung. I was interested in Asus because it'€™s the only brand that uses Intel as the processor. It has 4 GB RAM (Random-access Memory), equaling that of a laptop, so you can imagine how fast the phone is. I use it mostly to communicate and work on my emails. The downside of this phone is the low quality of the music features.
