Ignoring the Jakarta city administration's ban, several animal traders are still using sidewalks and other public spaces to operate their businesses in the lead up to Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) on Sept. 24 when all Muslims are required to sacrifice an animal, such as a goat or cow, if there are financial able to do so.
Kompas.com reported that in a number of areas in East Jakarta, there were animal traders occupying sidewalks and even sections of road, as has been seen on Jl. Cililitan Besar in Makasar subdistrict.
Mamat, one of the traders ignoring the ban, said that he had traded animals every year on the sidewalk and although he knew about the ban, he still displayed his goats on the sidewalk.
The ban on selling animals in public spaces is stated in Gubernatorial Instruction No. 168/2015 on animal accommodation and slaughter.
'I have to display some of my goats [on the sidewalk] so as to attract buyers,' he argued, adding that most of his goats were kept under a bridge, near the sidewalk.
Mamat said that he would remove his goats from the sidewalk if he was asked too [directly].
A trader named Widodo, on Jl. Kerja Bakti in East Jakarta, also displays his animals on the sidewalk and even on the road. 'I have used this place since 2010 when I still traded alongside my father,' he said.
Jahidin, another trader, preferred to respect the ban. He displayed his animals on vacant land on Jl. Squadron Halim, East Jakarta. 'I am aware of the ban, and therefore, I don't put my animals on the sidewalk,' he said.
Jakarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama warned that he would ask Public Order Agency officers to take serious measures against animal traders using public space for their businesses.
'If they sell their animals on the sidewalk, I will shut them down. The regulation has been effective since last year; sidewalks are provided for pedestrians,' Ahok said. (bbn)(++++)
